On the first day of floor hockey, we learned proper stick handling techniques. We played 2 activities where we practiced proper stick handling, maintaining possession of the puck (defense) and trying to win possession of the puck (offense). The games we played were hockey highway, hockey pirates, and hockey highway number style, which was K-2 only. On the second day of floor hockey, my 4-6th grade classes practiced passing within teams during a keep away game in order to earn points learning spatial awareness, marking a man, and creating open space by opening up the "field". We then turned the small sided games into actual games with goalies, playing either 4 on 4 or 6 on 6 depending on class size. The third day of class we did stations with my double classes (2 classes in the gym at the same time). The pictures below reveal some of the stations provided. There was a shooting station, an assessment station, a video station where the kids got to watch the top ten goals of the year (this was only my 3rd grade double classes), a station for my younger kids that involved the same skills from hockey highway only they were dribbling to numbers counting by 3's, 2 live game stations of 6 on 6, and a station where the kids practiced shooting at bowling pins that were worth different points. The fourth day of floor hockey we either played sideline hockey or crazy puck hockey. I played sideline hockey with my larger sized classes. Sideline players were actively involved in the game and can even score from the sideline. We played full court in the gym and it was 6 on 6 with 3 pucks being played at once. Crazy puck hockey is the same idea without having to rotate players on and off the sideline as their class sizes are smaller.
Above and to the right we have Carter VanBuren at the assessment station. He is assessing his partner on his dribbling and shooting skills. See the 4th through 6th grade assessment below:
Below is the 3rd through 2nd grade assessment. There is a picture of the front and back. You will also see the standards on this assessment.
As you can see, he is super excited about all the points he scored! The pins were worth 3, 2, and/or 1 point. If you get all 3 pins down you earn 6 points!!
Aloysius and Asia can dribble their hockey puck using soft taps and both sides of their blade while counting by 3's. Awesome!!
These boys and girls got to watch the top 10 goals of the year 2014-2015. Pretty impressive if you want to see it for yourself check it out:

A main focus towards the end of our unit was to really hit Standard 2: A Safe and Healthy Environment. Each class came up with their own goals as seen above. They were able to choose how they were going to meet this standard by placing a popsicle stick with their name on it under their "I Can" statement. At the end of class, we reviewed how we did in regards to sportsmanship and creating a healthy environment.
