Calories in = Calories out- During this activity, the students learned the definition of a calorie. A calorie is defined as the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of .1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. To maintain a healthy body weight, we need to balance our diets. The number of calories we burn should about equal the number of calories we take in. The students worked in teams. They relay raced to grab one card at a time and bring it back to their group. As a team they figured out where their card fell on the calorie number line as depicted above and to the left. They performed those exercises together. They had to cheer each other on and encourage their groups to complete the exercises as they could not move on to the next card until their whole team finished. The team with the most cards won. We then ordered our cards from least to greatest and compared our foods.
